A Letter From The CEO:

Aloha & Bula,
Over the years, I’ve watched the kava industry grow—rapidly and in many ways, beautifully. I’ve had the honor of meeting incredible kava bar owners and product creators who understand the sacredness of the root, respect its' origins, and carry the spirit of the culture with integrity.


But I’ve also seen the opposite...


Too many brands are entering this space with no real understanding of what kava is or where it comes from. For them, it’s just another trend to capitalize on—a product to sell without honoring the culture, people, or traditions that gave it life.


Kava—or Yaqona, as we call it in Fiji—is more than a drink. It is a sacred root, central to life across the Pacific Islands: Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Rotuma, and Hawaii. It’s used in ceremonies, in storytelling (Talanoa), in rites of passage, and in moments of unity and healing. In our traditions, kava is served from the Tanoa, the ceremonial bowl, surrounded by family and community—where stories, wisdom, and relationships are passed down from generation to generation.


I was born into this culture.


My father, born and raised in Fiji, came from a chiefly bloodline. I was raised in Hawaii, immersed in both Fijian and Hawaiian traditions. From the 1970s until he passed, my father and I traveled the islands and mainland U.S., performing traditional Fijian kava ceremonies—teaching the deeper meaning of kava and honoring our ancestral ways.

That’s why I created DaHonu Life.


DaHonu Life is not just a kava seltzer—it’s a cultural bridge. It’s a modern expression of an ancient tradition, created to give people a healthier alternative to alcohol while staying true to the root’s sacred purpose. We’re here to help people connect, heal, and live better—through tradition, not at the cost of it.


And I’ll be real about this: I’m not afraid to call out companies that are only in it for the money.


If you’re profiting from kava without any respect for the culture, the people, or the sacredness of the root—you’re not honoring it. You’re exploiting it. Too many brands are using kava as a trend, with no knowledge of the customs, no education behind the product, and no acknowledgment of its deep cultural value. That’s not just disrespectful - it’s dangerous.


Cultural appropriation has no place in this space.


If you’re going to profit from the root, you better be willing to protect and uplift the people it comes from. And if you’re not—people like me will speak up. Because I have to. Because this is my culture. Because this is our root.


At DaHonu, we lead with culture first—always.


We partnered with Kalm with Kava and Morgan Smith, one of the most respected names in the kava world. Their kava is sourced directly from the farmers in the villages, supporting the hands and families who have cared for this plant for generations. Every batch is crafted with intention, transparency, and integrity.


We use 1500 mg of a true kavalactone extract in each can—not raw powder, not crude root slurry. This extract was developed through advanced processes that enhance bioavailability, meaning your body absorbs it more efficiently, needing fewer kavalactones to feel the effects more quickly than other extracts and with a smoother feel.


There’s an important difference between “kavalactone extract” and “kavalactones.”
Our label reads “1500 mg of kavalactone extract”—not 1500 mg of pure kavalactones. Just like a “coffee extract” isn’t pure caffeine, our extract contains active kavalactones in a refined, functional format. Less total plant material is needed, but the experience is stronger and cleaner.
